Working in musical theater, Michael Korie was nominated for the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards as lyricist for Grey Gardens, composed by Scott Frankel with a book by playwright Doug Wright and direction by Michael Greif. Developed at The Sundance Institute, produced at Playwrights Horizons, transferred to Broadway in 2007, subsequently produced at leading theaters around America, in Japan and upcoming in the UK. Recorded on P.S. Classics. Awarded The American Academy of Arts Richard Rodgers Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for outstanding musical. Selected for "The Best Plays Theater Yearbook" anthology. The musical’s route to Broadway was profiled in a documentary film by Albert Maysles broadcast on PBS, produced by East of Doheny. Also with composer Frankel, Korie created lyrics to Happiness, a musical with book by John Weidman and direction and choreography by Susan Stroman, produced by Lincoln Center Theater in 2009. Korie and Frankel's upcoming musical is Finding Neverland, produced by Weinstein Live Entertainment with book by Allan Knee and direction and choreography by Rob Ashford, scheduled for production in 2012. Doctor Zhivago premieres in Australia in March 2011 as a co-production of the Australian Opera with music by Lucy Simon, book by Michael Weller, lyrics by Korie and Amy Powers, directed by Des McAnuff. Upcoming is Beauty with composer Regina Spector and bookwriter/director Tina Landau, as well as a new musical commission by Playwrights Horizons with composer Frankel and playwright Richard Greenberg.

Working in opera, Korie wrote the libretto to composer Ricky Ian Gordon's The Grapes of Wrath. Directed by Eric Simonson, the opera premiered to acclaim at Minnesota Opera followed by productions at Los Angeles Disney Concert Hall, Utah Opera and Pittsburgh Opera. In Spring, 2010, it received its New York concert premiere at Carnegie Hall with an all-star cast drawn from both opera and musical theater. Recorded on P.S. Classics. Korie's libretto to The Garden of the Finzi Continis, a new opera based on the novel by Bassini, with music by Ricky Ian Gordon and direction by Eric Simonson premieres at Minnesota Opera in 2013. Korie has been commissioned by The Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center Theater in collaboration with The English National Opera to create the libretto of Senna, a new opera composed by Michael Torke with direction by Des McAnuff. Following workshop productions this Autumn, it is scheduled to premiere in London in 2012. Produced librettos by Korie to operas composed by Stewart Wallace include Harvey Milk (San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, New York City Opera, recorded on Teldec Classics); Hopper's Wife (Long Beach Opera, director Christopher Alden); Kabbalah (BAM Next Wave Festival, director Ann Carlson; Houston production by DiverseWorks, director Rhoda Levine, recorded on Koch Classics); and Where's Dick? (Houston Grand Opera, director Richard Foreman).

Korie's lyrics have received The Kleban Award, Jonathan Larson Foundation Award, and ASCAP Richard Rodgers Award. His songs with Scott Frankel were spotlighted at The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage Broadway Today. He serves on the council of the Dramatists Guild and as a panelist for ASCAP, Opera America and BMI Musical Theater Workshop development programs. He teaches lyric-writing at Yale, and serves as an artistic advisor to emerging opera composers and librettists at the American Lyric Theater.
